Freedom

    Freedom's not a mere right
    that we freely enjoy,
    but the costliest right
    that a people must buy.

    For freedom is bought
    in each generation
    by valiant souls,
    who die for its cause.

    It's cost is not just
    the blood of the dead;
    it exacts the great pain
    of the souls who remain.

    'Tis bought by the grief
    of the mothers and wives,
    who are left all alone,
    to weep and to cry.

    'Tis bought by the tears
    of small children and babes,
    who are left without fathers
    to guide their small feet.

    'Tis bought by the men,
    whose lives are left wrecked
as they fight with the ghosts
    of yesterday's war.

    This bourdensome price,
    is not simply paid once
    but on each passing day,
for the rest of their lives.

    Consider then well,
    the choices you make.
Is your choice worth the cost?
    or d'you waste it away?
